Foreclosure filings in La Plata County continue to accelerate, even ahead of last year's record-setting pace. County Treasurer Ed Murray's office recorded 297 foreclosures in 2009, about double the 148 seen in 2008 and by far the highest in records dating back to 1990.

When John King stopped making payments on his home in Coral Gables, Fla., two years ago, he assumed the foreclosure ended his mortgage contract, he said. In December, a Miami-Dade County court gave collectors permission to pursue him for $44,000 stemming from the default.
